Ecology and distribution. Our material was collected at depths between 325 and 409 m, epibiotic on Staurotheca nonscripta and with gonothecae in December. Previously reported by Briggs (1938), at a depth of 45 – 54 m, from Commonwealth Bay. Circum-Antarctic distribution (Peña Cantero et al. 2004).
description
Description. Hydrorhiza stolonal, irregularly giving rise to erect, long pedicels with a distal hydrotheca. Perisarc smooth or occasionally with annulations after a constriction. Hydrotheca bell-shaped, relatively large. Rim of hydrothecal aperture with 16 blunt cusps separated by deep embayments. Gonotheca elongate, cylindrical, distally truncated, slightly swollen at basal half, and basally tapering to pedicel. Gonothecal wall smooth. Pedicel ringed. Measurements (in μm). Pedicel: length 1300 – 11500. Hydrotheca: height 2248.5 ± 354 (n = 13), range 1775 – 2750; diameter at aperture 1451 ± 286 (n = 10), range 1000 – 1925; height of basal chamber 125 ± 42 (n = 11), range 125 – 250. Basal spherule: diameter 130 ± 15 (n = 12), range 100 – 150. Gonotheca: length 4610, maXimum diameter 930, diameter at aperture 650.
