Description
The Department of Environmental Biology of the University of Navarra (AMBIUN) was established in 2013 as the merger of the former departments of Plant Biology (Botany and Plant Physiology) and Zoology and Ecology. Members of the department have been researching and teaching on bioinformatics, animal and plant taxonomy, ecology and biogeography among other fields for over 50 years. The Department is in charge of the Museum of Zoology of the University of Navarra (MZNA) and Herbarium PAMP, where the Department’s research collections are housed. The Museum of Zoology of the University of Navarra (MZNA), established in 1980 under the direction of Professor R. Jordana, curates research specimens and samples from basic and applied research projects, as well as donated taxonomical collections. Currently, MZNA houses over 2,500,000 vouchered specimens (mostly invertebrates), including hundreds of types, available for research. As of Jun 2017, MZNA is sharing through GBIF’s website the following collections: • MZNA- VERT: Vertebrates of the Museum of Zoology of the University of Navarra http://www.gbif.es/ic_colecciones.php?ID_Coleccion=10169 • MZNA-INV-FRW: Freshwater macroinvertebrates of the Museum of Zoology of the University of Navarra http://www.gbif.es/ic_colecciones.php?ID_Coleccion=10208 • MZNA-INV-ARAN: Spiders of the Museum of Zoology of the University of Navarra http://www.gbif.es/ic_colecciones.php?ID_Coleccion=10209 The PAMP Herbarium was founded in 1970 by Professor M. Losa España. The collection contains cheifly plants collected in or around Navarra province (Spain), mainly resulting from research projects and field work for dissertations. It also houses specimens from Professors J.M. Muñoz Medina’s and B. Casaseca’s collections, as well as exchange samples from Briotheca Hispanica. • PAMP: Herbarium PAMP of vascular plants, University of Navarra http://www.gbif.es/ic_colecciones.php?ID_Coleccion=9567 AMBIUN shares the University of Navarra’s overall institutional goals of serving the people, the community and the science through looking for and transmit the truth; contributing to the academic, cultural and personal development of its students; promoting scientific research; providing appropriate development opportunities to teachers and employees; and working for the dissemination of scientific knowledge, culture and social promotion. A selection of the MZNA and PAMP material is exhibited in the facilities of the Sciences Building of the University of Navarra (Museum of Sciences). AMBIUN caters to all biodiversity researchers, and makes loans and accepts deposits around the world.Contacts
