Description
Madagascar Biodiversity Center, Parc Botanique et Zoologique de Tsimbazaza received funding form BID for the project African Insect Atlas. Our center has a stellar track record of arthropod surveys, conservation policy involvement, and collection-based science research. The Center’s involvement in insect research has greatly expanded entomology training and research in the region. Over the past 12 years, MBC has organized and hosted dozens of workshops, conferences, and courses. The core of this project is the remaking of the analog Natural History collection. Our vision is to create a digital museum for targeted insect groups of Africa. By collating, digitizing and georeferencing specimens from Natural History collections in African countries, insects, more sensitive barometers of ecological conditions than the vertebrates used today, will become a tool for African conservation science and policymaking. By investing in training and the formation of a cross-institutional network, digitization efforts will continue after the GBIF funding phase.Contacts
