Description

Instituto de Investigação Agronómica (IIA) is a public institution since 1961, under the Ministry of Agriculture, devoted to research, technological development and innovation. The institution has legal personality, owning full autonomy regarding administration, finances and assets. IIA is a national institution maintaining a net of 10 experimental stations, located in the different agro ecological zones of Angola, with laboratories in the following areas: soil analysis, entomology, phytopathology, plant mineral nutrition, histology, and post-harvest. IIA has the mission to develop technologies to improve the performance of agriculture productive chains, contributing to food security and, at the same time, to biodiversity sustainability. The institution main goal is to assure the coordination and execution of agroforestry research projects. Currently, is working with the main productive chains such as: maize, rice, wheat, cassava, potatoes, beans, soya, banana and citrus. The overall objectives are: design and implement projects related to plants and insects with economic value, contributing for their conservation; create and adapt new varieties and technologies; produce and validate basic seeds and plant seedlings; provide services to the community such as: empowerment of innovation agents, managers and sectorial leaders; perform analysis of soil, fertilizers, seeds, diseases and plagues; technical assistance to producers; test the performance of agriculture machinery; trade of seeds and plant seedlings. Those benefiting from IIA work are family and business farmers, as well as, the Angolan agro-industry. IIA holds at his headquarters, in Huambo, an Herbarium and Entomological Collections, of national and international interest, and is focused on making the data accessible.
