Ornithological observations were made in and around the lowland tropical forest in the Donga River basin in the southern part of Taraba State (Kurmi Local Government), eastern Nigeria (10° 34' E - 10° 55' E and 6° 57'N - 7° 17'N). In the area where most of the field research was done, the forest has suffered considerable disturbance, but some of the more remote parts trekked through and worked in were in better shape. In terms of the proportion of land still covered by forest, Kurmi Local Government can probably compare favourably with any local government in Nigeria outside the major forest blocks in Cross River State. The observations were made between 1967 and 1999 and a total of 849 observations of 306 species were recorded, with an additional 8 unconfirmed species. Some of the rare sightings were Grey-headed Broadbill (Smithornis sharpii), Red-capped Robin-Chat (Cossypha natalensis), Green-throated Sunbird (Nectarinia rubescens), Johanna's Sunbird (Nectarinia johannae), and Cameroon Indigobird (Vidua camerunensis), some of which were first sightings for Nigeria. Data collection was carried out by Mark Hopkins, Newton Isaac, Herman Gray, Genesis Limtin, Bulus Jeremiah, Fidelis, Paul Ishaya, Robert Payne, Laura Payne, Phillip Hall, Nehemiah James, John Barker, Glenn Mitchell, S. A. Manu, Malik Abubakar, Modu Kolo, Mohammed Boyi, Harry Hamsom, Naphtali Enwongulu, Tim Palmer.Purpose
This data set contain bird species that illustrates the importance of the site, including some of conservation concern. When collated with other data, this information will be provided to the Government at both the State and Federal levels to push for the conservation of these sites.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
The dataset was collected in forest patches in the Donga River basin in Kurmi Local Government area of Taraba State. These forests were visited 1967 - 1986, and surveyed between 2nd April, 1995 and 11th of January, 1999.Sampling
The occurrence data were collected using a random method where routes were walked slowly, and birds seen and heard recorded, with a significant amount of time spent on identifying rare and unusual bird sightings. Four surveys were carried out in the 1990s – 2-7 April 1995, 21-24 October 1995, 9-11 February 1996 and 11 January 1999 – to explore the Donga basin ornithologically. These records were collated with ad hoc observations made earlier, dating back to 1967.Quality Control
The quality of this data set was assessed and reviewed by Mark Hopkins after using the following tools: Google Earth, IOC World bird list, and Borrow and Demey: Field Guide to birds of West Africa to make sure the data entered are accurate.Method steps
- Google Earth: Used to generate the location of the study area. Open Refine: Used to check for double entries. Encyclopedia of Life and IOC World Bird List: Used to check and confirm the current nomenclature of the birds Borrow and Demey: Birds of western Africa: Used initially to identify the species on the field Global Name resolver: Used to resolve conflicting scientific names. GBIF species name matching: Used to confirm and match up names of the birds with the existing data set in GBIF.
