Description

The Herbarium collections PRC, Charles University, Faculty of Science house more than 2,300,000 specimens of algae, bryophytes, fungi, lichens, seeds / fruits, and vascular plants. Due to its size, age (founded in 1775), geographical coverage and importance (tens of thousands of type specimens), the Herbarium collections PRC belong to the 25 biggest and oldest herbaria in the world and the collections within which are housed by the university institutions are ranked in the top 10. The Herbarium collections PRC together with staff affiliated with the Department of Botany contribute to a wide range of scientific and teaching activities in plant systematics, evolution, ecology, biogeography, floristics, conservation biology and paleoecology. The Department of Botany holds also living cultures of algae, cyanobacteria and microscopic fungi - ca 3,700 strains in total.
