Description
Collections in the Botany and Mycology Section include; Algae, Bryophtes, Lichens, Fungi, and Vascular Plants Several thousand specimens assembled by members of the Natural History Society of New Brunswick (1862-1932) make up the nucleus of the collection of the NBM botanical and mycological collections. The vascular plant collection remains one of the main sources of documentation for the flora of New Brunswick. In recent years the geographic and taxonomic scope of the collections has expanded considerably. Freshwater and marine algae, bryophytes, and lichens and allied fungi now account for the majority of the overall holdings. The NBM lichen and bryophyte collections are the largest in Maritime Canada. There are also extensive collections from elsewhere in eastern Canada and from other parts of North America and Europe. The fungal collection is growing rapidly with a very active research program. Collections in the Zoology Section include; Invertebrates (exclusive of insects and molluscs), Insects, Molluscs, Fish, Fish Scales, Amphibians and Reptiles, Birds, and Mammals. Collections of frozen (-80oC) and dried tissues have grown rapidly. Portions of the NBM zoology collections date to the late to mid-19th century, with many of these specimens associated with the Natural History Society of New Brunswick (mainly 1880-1917), but some material assembled by other collectors dates to as early as 1840. While the geographic focus on the NBM zoological collections is the fauna of Maritime Canada, and more generally northeastern North America, a small but significant international component is also part of the collection. The zoological specimen collections (dried, wet, and frozen) are augmented by extensive files that may include field notes, photographs, pathology reports, tissue analysis, DNA sequence data, and x-rays. The vertebrate collections are largest holdings in Atlantic Canada.Contacts
