description
Description ♂ ♀. Head (profile as in L. assimilis, Fig. 304, but with deeper gena). Ground-colour black. Frons at broadest point 0.41 (♂) or 0.47 (♀), at lunula 0.37 (♂) or 0.43 (♀), of maximum head-width (frontal view). Fronto-orbital plate yellowish-white pruinose, more brownish above; parafacial, face, gena and most of occiput silvery pruinose, sometimes tinged with yellow, especially in ♀. Frontal triangle narrow, dull brownish-grey. Parafacial moderate, almost as broad as (♂) or broader than (♀) postpedicel; setulae in several rows. Antenna black, except tip of pedicel which is orange; postpedicel 2.3 (♂) or 1.9 (♀) times as long as broad, falling short of mouth-margin by 0.3 (♂) or 0.6 (♀) its length. Arista short-plumose, the hairing at widest point slightly shorter (0.9) than width of postpedicel. Vibrissa strong. Gena moderate, 0.17 (♂) or 0.22 (♀) of vertical eye-length; genal setae strong, sparse. Palpus yellow, greatly swollen in apical half (as in L. assimilis, Fig. 305). Thorax. Ground-colour black. Scutum and scutellum generally yellowish-grey dusted, sometimes very much more grey, sometimes very much more yellow or yellowish-brown; pleura more grey. Scutum with weakly marked but distinct brown vittae as follows: a median vitta running from neck to scutellum and sometimes encroaching weakly on to scutellum, and a pair of narrow vittae along the line of the dc setae, these sometimes reduced to enlarged and partially confluent bristle-dots in ♀; also with thinly dusted dark markings as follows: a thin prst vitta just mesad of dc, running from neck to a short distance behind suture, a broad prst patch over ia and sa, and a post vitta between dc and ia, these often less conspicuous in ♀. Anterior spiracle yellowish. Acr setulae in 5 irregular rows at suture. Dc 2 + 4, all setae usually long and strong, sometimes anterior 2 post pairs rather reduced. 2 pprn. 1 + 2 ia, all long and strong. 1 + 1 sa, both strong. 1 strong and 1 weaker proepisternal setae. 1 strong proepimeral, equal to the strong proepisternal, with 2 – 3, rarely up to 9, adjacent setulae. Anepisternum with 1 short seta in upper anterior corner; posterior row with 3 strong and 3 weak setae. 3 strong kepst, lower one closer to posterior than to anterior seta. Meron bare, rarely with a setula above hind coxa. Scutellum with disc densely setulose, with 1 row of setulae descending on to sides; ventral surface bare. Legs. Coxae, trochanters, femora and tarsi black, femora broadly yellow at apex; tibiae yellow. Fore coxa bare behind. Fore femur without av setae or spinules; pv row complete, but the setae sparse and mostly shorter than femoral depth; pd row complete. Fore tibia with 1 short submedian pv seta, without ad; with d, pd and 0 (♂) or 1 (♀) short pv apical setae. Fore tarsomeres without modifications. Mid femur with only short setulae on av and pv surfaces, except for a few short fine pv setae in basal third in ♂, equal to femoral depth; 1 a at middle; 2 p preapicals. Mid tibia with 1 submedian p and 1 strong v also at middle; with strong ad, av, pv and v apicals, and a weaker p apical. Mid tarsomeres without modifications. Hind coxa without a seta on posterior apical margin. Hind trochanter only short-setulose below. Hind femur with 1 strong av and, in ♂, with 2 – 3 fine pv in basal third, the pv longer than femoral depth, and with 1 each short av and pv preapicals, otherwise with only setulae on ventral surfaces; ad row complete; 1 pd preapical. Hind tibia with 1 ad, 1 av, and 1 pd; d and ad preapical setae present; 1 av but no pv apical. Hind tarsomeres not modified. Wing. Clear. Tegula brown to orange, basicosta yellow. Crossvein r-m placed below the point where vein R 1 enters costa; dm-cu straight, longer than apical section of vein CuA 1. Vein M slightly curved forward before apex and converging with vein R 4 + 5 (as in L. assimilis, Fig. 306). Calypters white, with creamy margins. Haltere yellow. Abdomen. Ground-colour black. Dust on tergites grey, sometimes partly tinged with yellow, especially behind. In ♂, dorsal areas of tergites with a pattern of large dark quadrate spots (Fig. 326), these spots mostly coalescing on tergites 3 and 4 and completely coalescing on tergite 5, not encroaching far on to sides of tergites (as in L. assimilis, Fig. 308); in ♀, this dark pattern slightly less extensive, the dark spots on tergites 3 and 4 not coalescing, separated by dust (as in L. assimilis ♂, Fig. 307), and the mark on tergite 5 with a dusted indentation on hind-margin. ♂ epandrium very large, mainly grey dusted; ♀ ovipositor with exposed tergites dusted grey to brownish-grey. Sternites 1 – 5 grey dusted; sternites 3 and 4 subshining in ♂. Setae weakly developed, the only erect setae being a pair of lateral marginals on tergite 4 and 3 pairs of marginals on tergite 5. Sternite 2 with a pair of strong setae, ♂ sternites 3 – 5 greatly expanded and sternites 3 and 4 completely covered with short dense setulae (Fig. 327), sternites 3 – 5 in ♀ with only sparse setulae. Ƌ terminalia. Epandrium separated from tergite 5 by syntergosternite 8, which has 2 spiracles. Tergite 6 and sternite 6 absent. Surstylus absent, i. e. fused to epandrium without trace (Fig. 328). Cercal plate large in relation to epandrium, deeply divided ventrally (Fig. 329). Hypandrium attached at one point, via an apparent praegonite to lower anterior corner of epandrium. Phallic complex (Fig. 330): hypandrium expanded at posterior end as a Vshaped plate connected to base of phallus; praegonite and postgonite present, the latter simple and curved; phallapodeme long but normal in structure, connected to each side of hypandrium by a bridge; phallus long, tubular, simple, juxta large, with a few coarse teeth basally; basal part with a multi-toothed process. ♀ ovipositor (Figs 331 – 333). Tergites 6 and 7 complete; tergite 8 divided dorsally, each half displaced laterally by the large epiproct. Sternite 6 absent; what appears to be sternite 7 represented by a curious branched plate; sternite 8 represented by 2 small, narrow, weakly sclerotised plates. Epiproct large, with several setae. Hypoproct large, with only weak spines at apex. Cercus broad, plate-like, connected to the epiproct, with several strong setae. 3 spermathecae. Measurements. Wing-length, 4.5 – 5.5 mm (♂), 5.0 – 6.5 mm (♀). Body-length, 6.0 – 7.0 mm (♂), 6.5 – 8.0 mm (♀).
diagnosis
Diagnosis. This species, together with L. assimilis and L. weschei, differs from other Australian Lispe by the slight forward curvature of vein M towards vein R 4 + 5 (Fig. 306). L. xenochaeta differs from both L. assimilis and L. weschei by the presence of a strong submedian v seta on mid tibia.
distribution
Distribution. Known only from Australia (WA, NT, Q, NSW, ACT, V, SA).
