description
Lesser Bream. To 22.5 cm (8.9 in) SL (Froese and Pauly 2019). Circumglobal; western Pacific Ocean north to Japan (Nakabo 2002); inclusion here based on a 1.1 cm (0.4 in) specimen captured off southern California (33 ° 05 ’ N, 117 ° 39 ’ W) (Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California), and the statement in Moser (1996) that larvae were taken in the “ southern part of the CalCOFI pattern, ” which we take to mean off southern Baja California; Guatamala to Chile (Froese and Pauly 2019; note that we were unable to verify this record). Depth: surface to 439 m (1,440 ft) (min.: Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California; max.: Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California). A record of 3,000 m (9,840 ft) (Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California) was based on the maximum depth fished by a midwater trawl and may represent a catch shallower than the maximum depth.
