general
general
Thallus olive colored, up to 4 cm across; lobes 0.2-0.4 mm wide, radiating from the center, flat. Isidia develop laminally, beginning as cylindrical or globose and becoming flat, measuring approximately 0.1 mm across and as much as 1 mm long. Hyphae loose, attached only at thallus base. Apothecia with brown disk, measuring approximately 1mm across; asci holding (8) 12-16 spores; spores simple, hyaline, subglobse or ellipsoid, 7-10 x 4-6 μm (Henssen, 1963).
Cells in the central layer of the thallus are cylindrical and as large as 20 μm long, while cells at the surface and base of the thallus are ellipsoid and measure approximately 6-9 x 5-6 μm. Apothecia are about 1 mm across, with 90-150 μm wide thalline margin; hymenium measuring 80-125 μm; subhymenial layer hyaline, 40-70μm thick and comprised of ellipsoid cells measuring 3-4.5 μm; asci 55-58 x 11.5- 13 μm. Photobiont cells measuring 5-13 x 3.5-10 μm (Henssen, 1963).
morphology
Primary thallus disappearing; pseudopodetia dorsiventral or erect, caespitose, sparingly branched, with main stems usually ca 1 mm (to 15) in diameter, decumbent and forming low flat thalli, or erect, often dorsiventrally differentiated, with lower surface showing a distinct pink tomentum in fresh condition, firmly attached to the ground, 1-5 cm tall, 0.5-1 (-2) mm thick at the base; the base pale brownish or blackish; lower part without phyllocladia but with a grayish, whitish, or roseate tomentum; phyllocladia crowded toward the apices, whitish-gray with a bluish tinge or whitish, turning pale dirty yellowish in herbarium, granuliform, or united, somewhat flattened, verrucose to thickly crenate-squamulose, lacking finger-like projections, lobate, 0.5 mm broad, indistinctly stalked, appressed to the pseudopodetium; cephalodia on lower side, hemispherical, grayish-white, 0.3-0.8 mm, brown or bluish green, globose, partly concealed in the tomentum, containing Nostoc. (Thomson & Brehmer, 1984; Hinds and Hinds, 2007)
"Central medullary layer of pachydermatous, 3-4 µ, loosely conglutinate, strictly parallel hyphae; exterior hyphae dirty yellowish, gelatinous, pachydermatous, 6-8 µ thick; cortex of phyllocladia 15-25 µ, grayish." (Thomson & Brehmer, 1984)
"Apothecia terminal on the podetia or grouped on the upper branches, immarginate; disk dark brown, 1-1.5 mm broad, convex or irregularly swollen; lower side with the center tomentose, the margin bare; exterior hyphae brownish yellow, gelatinous, to the edge becoming parallel and perpendicular to the surface; hypothecium 35-40 µ, hyaline; hymenium 40-50 µ (60-70 µ acc. Frey), yellowish, I+ blue; paraphyses slightly coherent, 1.7-2.0 µ thick, the tips brownish, capitate, 3-4 µ; asci elongate clavate 50-55 x 9-11 µ; spores 8, cylindrical, with one end narrower, slightly bent or straight, 3 septate 27-38 x 2.5-3 µ. Conidia straight, bacilliform, 5 x 1.5" (orig. from: Thomson & Brehmer, 1984).
